Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden Old Imperial Rest House(Kyu-Gokyu-Sho)

Old Imperial Rest House was built in 1896 as a rest house for the Imperial family when they enjoyed plants in greenhouse. The wooden architecture is designed using the Stick Style, which was popular in the U.S. in the late 19th century. During the end of Meiji and Taisho era, the Imperial Family often came to Shinjuku Gyoen. In the latter half of Taisho era, this building was remodeled and used for a clubhouse for enjoying golf and tennis besides visiting the greenhouse. It is said that the party was held for the state guest in the Rest House, and the rooms were decorated with flowers grown in Shinjuku Gyoen.

Although most buildings in Shinjuku Gyoen were almost burnt out during the war in 1945, the Old Imperial Rest House escaped the damage. After the war, the Rest House was used as the management office until 1994. Due to the historical and cultural value of the building, the repair work was performed for its preservation from 2000-2001. And it has been designated as a national important cultural property since 2001.
