It is a temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, formally called "Kakanzanhongakuintaisoji". The predecessor of Taisoji is "Taisoan", which is a thatched hut that a monk named Taiso established in 1596. When Masakatsu, the 5th feudal lord of Naito family, died in 1629, he was buired underneath Taisoji. Since then, Taisoji has been the grave for the successive lords.
Since Taisoji was located in Naito Shinjuku, a post town, many people visit the temple. As a result, Monzenmachi (temple town) repidly developed. As Shinjuku city developed after Meiji era, the inside of the temple was renovated. However, in 1945, Tokyo Air Raid occurred, and Taisoji was badly damaged.
The temple is regarded as "Shinjuku mini-museum" as you can observe several historically improtant cultural assets .
